Maintenance Technician IV - District Wide

Hardin School Districts 17H & 1 have the following position open for the 2025-26 school year:

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN IV - District Wide

Carpentry and/or Plumbing Training & Experience preferred.

Full‑time position w/benefits (medical/dental insurance, flex benefits, vacation & sick leave, paid holidays, and retirement).

Position Overview

The person in this position performs unskilled and skilled maintenance work for the District buildings, grounds and property under general supervision of the Director of Maintenance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Perform unskilled and skilled duties in a variety of trades.
* Perform general maintenance work inside and outside the physical plant.
* Recommend supplies and equipment for purchase, and maintain the inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, hardware, materials, and supplies.
* Perform maintenance and repair of the following: boilers, glass, concrete, sprinklers (above and below ground), masonry, insulation, electrical, pumps, carpet, controls, roof, basic carpentry, HVAC, tile, plumbing, small equipment.
* Change filters and service motors and belts.
* Install and maintain external security lights and internal lighting and ballasts.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

* Education / Certification / Experience: High school diploma, GED or equivalent; low pressure boiler license or ability to obtain one; skilled in one or more maintenance or construction trades.
* Experience: Five years of general facilities maintenance, construction and repair work or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Special Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment, trade practices and techniques, quality standards applicable to construction, maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds; basic safety practices; basic computer applications; use of standard shop tools and equipment; ability to perform job and communicate in a noisy environment; ability to be pulled from one job to another; work in small areas; work effectively without close supervision; perform heavy physical labor; work from plans, blueprints and specifications; create own plans as necessary; keep proper records; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work flexible hours; establish and maintain cooperative relationships; manage time and responsibilities; handle stressful situations; maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters; perform duties with awareness of District requirements and Board policies.


Equipment Used

Hand & power tools, vehicles, computer, printer, calculator, telephone, small and large maintenance and construction equipment.


Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct & guide subcontractors.


Work Environment

Regularly works inside and occasionally outside; meets deadlines with time constraints; walks, stands, bends, stoops, kneels, crawls, stretches, pushes heavy equipment, lifts and carries equipment and objects; lifts/moves up to 50 pounds; requires dexterity; close/distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus; able to speak, hear, and exchange information.

Often performs routine work; frequently exercises flexibility; noise level moderate to loud; guidance and reinforcement usually available; social interactions requiring oral and written communications.

Community

Big Horn County, Montana is rich in history, culture and time‑honored traditions. It includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations. Hardin (county seat) is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River and the edge of the Crow Reservation. The town is surrounded by productive farms and ranches. Coal mining has also contributed greatly to the local economy. Hardin is located 46 miles southeast of Billings (largest city in the State) by way of Interstate 90. The Big Horn County Museum, Little Big Horn Battlefield and Chief Plenty Coups State Park provide interesting and important history of the area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Yellowtail Dam offers a majestic view of the water below. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports. This area of Big Sky Country also offers fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, camping, etc. for the outdoor enthusiast. Annual events in Big Horn County include: Little Big Horn Days, Native Days, Crow Fair & Rodeos.
