Located in Switzerland, EPFL is recognized for its vibrant international community, cutting-edge research, and strong interdisciplinary collaborations. The EPFL-Valais campus in Sion offers a dynamic and multicultural scientific environment, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a network of leading experts. The university’s commitment to innovation and sustainability makes it an ideal setting for research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and environmental science.
Research Topic and Significance
The focus of this PhD position is the development and application of large-scale deep learning models for constructing 3D models of coral reefs. The project aims to design novel scientific methodologies using machine learning and photogrammetry for the segmentation and 3D reconstruction of underwater videos, which are captured using consumer-grade cameras such as GoPros. Coral reefs are vital to marine biodiversity and ecosystem health, but they are increasingly threatened by climate change and human activities. Accurate, scalable mapping and monitoring of coral reefs are essential for effective conservation strategies. By integrating advances in multi-modal foundation models and AI-driven mapping pipelines, this research has the potential to revolutionize how scientists study and protect coral reef environments.
