Luxtelligence SA is a young, privately held, and rapidly growing Swiss high-tech startup company, founded in 2022 by researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL). We are developing next generation photonic integrated circuits based on electro-optical materials, in particular thin-film Lithium Niobate and Lithium Tantalate, that can revolutionize next generation optical interconnects for AI data centers and High-Performance Computing, 5G/6G, microwave photonics and find applications in quantum science and technology, with significant economic potential. We have a dedicated office and lab space with a total of 12 FTEs. We are entering a new, exciting phase of our activities, in which we will scale our operations to high-volume production, and foster key commercial partnerships to support our evolution.
About the role
To complement our PIC design team we are looking for a Photonic Design Engineer mastering the simulation and layout of high-speed electro-optical photonic ICs for optical signalling (IMDD and coherent communication). In this position, you will contribute to the development of advanced Process Design Kit (PDK) components, and to internal production tape‑outs as well as tape‑outs with our foundry partners.
Activity rate: 100%
Travel rate: less than 10%
Place of work: Lausanne, Switzerland
Start date: as soon as possible
Hybrid work available
Key Responsibilities
* FEM and FDTD simulation of optical and RF components
* Design and layout of photonic integrated circuits (PICs)
* Development of photonic building blocks, maintenance of a PDK library on established EPDA software (IPKISS, gdsfactory, PhotonForge), writing documentation and technical reports
* Development and maintenance of Design Rule Checking routines (DRC) to ensure the quality of the layout masks entrusted to the fabrication team
* Participate in tape‑outs and contribute to process integration projects with industrial foundry partners
* Develop infrastructure for data acquisition and management, storage and analysis of characterization data
* Electro‑optical characterization of PDK components (wafer and chip‑level testing)
What We’re Looking For
Experience
* PhD or MSc degree in Photonics/Physics/Electrical Engineering, with at least 3 years of industrial experience.
* Strong background in scientific and object‑oriented programming (Python, C++, Matlab)
* Familiarity with version control software (git)
* Proven track record of carrying out photonic integrated circuit tape‑outs at commercial SiPh / InP / TFLN foundries.
* Preference will be given to candidates with experience in at least two of the following areas: microwave engineering, MMIC design, EM simulations, Photonic Integrated Circuit design in platforms such as Lithium Niobate, InP and SiPh, microfabrication, radiofrequency PCB design.
* Excellent oral/written communication skills in English (French and German are a plus)
Mindset
* Strong experimental approach with a deep interest in the working mechanism of nanoscale devices, particularly non‑idealities and deviations from ideal behavior; highly observant and detail‑oriented
* Passionate and curious about integrated photonics and semiconductor devices, with a strong drive to translate innovative technologies into real‑world applications
* Proactive in learning and integrating new tools into workflows, with a particular interest in leveraging generative AI
* Thrives in a fast‑changing environment, readily adapting to shifting tasks and roles, and willing to step up effort when needed to meet critical deadlines.

* Excellence in documenting and presenting work, including underlying reasoning, to enable shared understanding and scalability
* Proactive in proposing new device concepts aligned with the company’s strategic roadmap and customer needs
* Values integrity and transparency as foundational principles
* Be part of an outstanding team with proven track record and deep technical expertise, at the forefront of integrated photonics.
* Help define the commercial backbone of a company with a concrete vision of bringing cutting‑edge integrated photonics to market.
* Join a young, diverse, flexible and highly motivated team
* Work closely with founders and tech leaders in an open, agile setting.
* Competitive compensation, equity participation, and flexible working conditions.
* An inspiring working environment, in Lausanne, on the shores of Lake Geneva
