The English Department of the University of Zurich invites applications for a PhD Assistant to start on 1 August 2025 at the Chair for Early Modern English Literature (Prof. Dr. Isabel Karremann). This postgraduate position is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of extension for up to three years. The position is open to candidates with a completed MA who are aiming for a PhD in Early Modern English Literature. We offer an attractive, cooperative work environment with good infrastructure in an international, stimulating environment in central Zurich with full access to library services and IT facilities. You will be allocated a workspace in the department; the university's regulations allow staff to work from home for up to 40% of their weekly employment time.
Your Responsibilities
* Individual work on a PhD project as well as other research activities (participation in workshops, conference papers, publications, applications for external funding)
* Independent teaching (two hours per week at BA level)
* Assisting in administrative tasks and research projects at the Chair
Your profile
* Excellent MA degree in English literature
* Well versed in English literature and cultural contexts, especially of the Renaissance and/or the long eighteenth century
* Willing to conduct research framed by recent theoretical approaches in early modern studies
* Team player with collaborative research and teaching interests
* Proficient in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication in English
* Competent in German or eager to acquire a working knowledge of German within two years
