PhD position on In-situ characterization and Digital Modeling of Li-Ion Batteries

We offer a PhD position on "In-situ characterization and Digital Modeling of Li-Ion Batteries" in the Materials and Device Engineering (MaDE) group led by Prof. Vanessa Wood. Our group and research activities are interdisciplinary and collaborative with a highly motivated team from diverse backgrounds. Research covers material development, structural analysis with x-ray techniques, and digital modeling and simulation of Li‑Ion batteries. The group also investigates the use of nanoparticles in optoelectronics, providing unique collaboration opportunities.

Project background

You will conduct in‑depth research on cutting‑edge Li‑Ion battery characterization and modeling.

* Development of beamline‑specific measurement cells for in‑situ tomography measurements
* Fabrication and characterization of samples in the laboratory
* Analysis and interpretation of beamline data
* Development of structure‑based multiphysics models to study electro‑chemo‑mechanical phenomena in Li‑Ion batteries

You will have the opportunity to use and build upon extensive datasets, code, and experience in tomographic measurements, image processing, and multiphysics simulation. During their study, doctoral students are encouraged to pitch and develop research ideas based on their findings, novel publications, and emerging challenges in the field.

Profile

* Highly motivated and creative
* Strong problem‑solving skills
* Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary field
* Ability to pursue research projects to advance technology and understanding
* Background in electrical, mechanical, chemical engineering, physics, material science or computer science
* Interest in working with large datasets

We offer

* Well‑equipped battery and optoelectronic laboratory
* Access to microscopy facilities
* Expertise in planning and executing measurements at beamline facilities worldwide
* Cooperation with a battery modeling software development company
* Motivated team with diverse research and study backgrounds
* Development of skills in long‑term scientific research: literature review, project planning, execution, data analysis, and publication
* Opportunities to present results at international conferences
