The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland, dedicated to cutting‑edge research in future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and fundamental science.
The Electron Beam Instrumentation Group develops instruments for measuring electron‑beam properties and works on plasma‑based free electron lasers as part of the EuPRAXIA and PACRI projects.
Position
Postdoctoral Fellow in plasma‑based free electron lasers
Application deadline: 31 December 2025
Responsibilities
* Design and develop instrumentation for characterising and optimising plasma‑driven free electron lasers, including diagnostics for beam quality, electron‑beam parameters and radiation characteristics.
* Model physical processes and conduct experimental work at SwissFEL and at EuPRAXIA partner facilities.
* Analyse experimental data and simulation results to validate theoretical models and identify improvement areas.
* Collaborate with international partners to advance the development of plasma‑based free electron lasers.
* Present research results at international conferences and workshops.
* Write manuscripts and contribute to publications in scientific journals.
Qualifications
* PhD in Physics or a related field, preferably with experience in free electron lasers or plasma physics.
* Significant expertise in instrumentation and diagnostics is an asset.
* Strong data‑analysis skills and a proven track record of publishing research.
* Self‑motivated, able to drive projects forward independently.
* Excellent leadership and teamwork skills.
* Adaptability and openness to a multicultural, international research environment.
