Requirements
Design and implement secure systems architectures across tool platforms that interact with Open Source/Access as well as commercial electric system modeling tools.
Direct the design and build of Open Source/Access tools to enable data translation from one electric system modeling tool to another and ultimately achieve system optimization.
Mentor engineering teams in secure coding practices, energy modeling techniques, and architectural decisions while fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
Inform cybersecurity activities to protect data sets specific to energy systems from cyber threats and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
Collaborate with utilities, academia, regulatory groups, modeling tool developers, and energy stakeholders to align software solutions with industry needs.
Partner with internal technical teams, including grid modelers and data scientists, to understand requirements and ensure that solutions align with team strategy.
Conduct risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate security vulnerabilities in energy system data that is procured and make available to tools without exposing vulnerabilities.
Stay updated on emerging cybersecurity threats, modeling and solver technologies, and regulatory changes. And manage external consultants in these areas, as necessary.
Communicate cybersecurity risks and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Partner with other GRIDS team leaders to obtain and fulfill system requirements to deliver on team objectives.
Must-Have:
Proven experience in (7+ years) software architecture and cybersecurity.
Proven leadership experience (3+ years).
Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks such as NERC CIP, NIST, or ISO 27001.
Expertise in secure coding practices, threat modeling, and penetration testing.
Experience with cloud platform (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred knowledge of power grid simulation, energy forecasting, and optimization algorithms.
Experience with energy sector software tools (e.g., OpenDSS, GridLAB-D, PSS/E, or similar).
Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
Experience with Open-Source projects, developer environments, and collaboration.
Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
Familiarity with security standards and compliance frameworks (e.g., ISO27001 certification).
Background in specific domains (e.g., fintech, e-commerce, enterprise SaaS).
Relevant certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM, TOGAF, or energy modeling credentials) are a plus.
Education
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Location
Colorado, California, Washington D.C., and the Seattle Area are preferred locations for this position. Candidates must be based in a state where Breakthrough Energy is registered or already has an established presence.
Compensation And Benefits
The starting salary range for this position is $300,00 to $400,000 annually. Salary offers within this range will vary depending on several factors, including but not limited to education, experience, skills, relevant certifications, and other qualifications. Employees may also be eligible for bonuses based on individual performance.
