Job description
The Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics at ETH Zurich ( https://ipa.phys.ethz.ch ) invites applications for a PhD position in experimental particle physics, to work on the LEAP-40 (Low-latency Edge AI for Physics searches at 40 MHz) project within the CMS experiment at CERN.
This project aims to enable real-time, model-independent searches for new physics at the full LHC bunch crossing rate. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to novel developments at the interface of ML, real-time systems, and particle physics data analysis.
The PhD candidate will contribute to the following key areas:
 * Development of deep learning algorithms for online event reconstruction and physics object calibration within the CMS Level-1 trigger;
 * Design and deployment of compact, high-fidelity neural embeddings for high-throughput, latency-constrained environments;
 * Implementation of real-time, model-agnostic pattern recognition algorithms for signal-agnostic physics searches at 40 MHz;
 * Integration and testing of these methods in the CMS Data Acquisition and Trigger systems for the High‑Luminosity LHC phase.
Qualifications
 * Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field, ideally with some prior research experience in experimental particle physics or machine learning.
 * Good programming skills (C++, Python) are required.
 * Experience with Machine Learning or low-latency computing is an asset.
 * A strong interest in data acquisition and real-time AI applications in HEP is essential.
The position is funded for 4 years, with an initial 12-month period leading to the aptitude colloquium required by ETH Zurich’s doctoral regulations.
Application
 * Interested candidates should submit by December 1st 2025: a motivation letter (max 1 page), a CV, latest academic transcript, and the names and contact details of two referees.
Applications (as a single PDF) should be sent via email, with the subject line "ETH LEAP-40 PhD Application".
