The goal of this work is to develop novel methods for nonlinear wave manipulation and topologically-protected waveguides, and to demonstrate these methods with acoustic metamaterials. The outcome will be relevant for the development of new technologies for controlling acoustic or electromagnetic waves.
Project background
In contrast with acoustic metamaterials considered so far, which are based on the resonating behavior of their meta-atoms and which suffer dissipation losses, the envisioned research will be based on the mutual and external synchronization of tunable self-oscillating meta-atoms, which will enable gain of energy from the metamaterial itself.
This research aims to engineer metamaterials enabling nonlinear topological protection of information transmission, derive the theoretical models governing them and demonstrate their intriguing properties experimentally. The practical realizations of these topological metamaterials will be based on many 3D-printed whistles that non-reciprocally transmit and amplify incident waves and that will be interconnected in periodic networks. Extension of the findings to microwave systems is also planned. The research outcomes are expected to be published in major specialized and broad-audience journals.
Profile
You are expected to have a MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Physics with a very strong academic track record. Solid theoretical modeling skills and fascination for wave phenomena are required. Ideally, you would be available for a start in winter 2026.
We are looking for highly motivated, committed, creative and eager to learn individuals, able to work in a team and with excellent communication skills. Working in a top-level research environment with advanced laboratory infrastructure, the candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop her/his research abilities.
