Asset Economist

THE POSITION
The Asset Economist (AE) plays a key role in maximizing the commercial value of Varo’s Cressier refinery. The AE ensures the smooth implementation of monthly operating plans through the optimization of crude and feedstock intakes using LP (linear programming) models.
As the first-line contact point for the Cressier refinery on all operational day-to-day matters, the AE ensures the implementation of short-term economic strategies and applies problem-solving skills to address operational challenges creatively and efficiently.
The AE also interfaces continuously with supply, logistics, and trading organizations to ensure alignment, providing weekly updates on the progress of the monthly plan implementation.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Preparing the monthly operating plans
* Using refinery LP models, derive economically optimized crude batching to define the refinery's crude diet composition.
* Prepare and analyze scenarios to ensure end-to-end value chain economic optimization.
* Determine demand and timing for feedstock & intermediate imports/exports.
* Monitor deviations between LP plan and actuals, challenging refinery constraints.
Running the daily refinery business
* Ensure smooth daily operations and implementation of the monthly refinery production plan.
* Align Varo-internal stakeholders by preparing and leading regular update meetings on refinery status and economics.
* Provide import/export economics for feedstocks and products.
* Anticipate potential challenges and show creativity in solving problems. Identify and capitalize on optimization opportunities.
* Support on-site planning and scheduling teams.
* Build and maintain collaborative relationships along the fuels value chain.
Travel to the refinery (twice a month) for on-site meetings and develop PowerBI-based data visualization and analysis tools to drive insights into optimization potential.
Your Profile - Essential
Knowledge, skills & abilities
* Team player with a commercial mindset and excellent communication skills.
* Experience in refinery planning & economics or similar roles.
* Fluent in English and working knowledge of French.
* Experience with LP models is a strong advantage.
* Proficiency in PowerBI.

* Resilience under pressure.
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, science, economics, or equivalent experience.
* At least 3 years of experience in refining or related industries.
