We are seeking a highly motivated mechanical engineer to support the development and instrumentation of our state-of-the-art experimental facilities. You will play an important role in designing, assembling, and operating custom-built systems for advanced research in granular and snow avalanche dynamics.
Your responsibilities will include supporting the design, instrumentation, and operation of our newly developed granular flume facility in collaboration with the SLF workshop. You will also be involved in developing slicing algorithms for automated 3D printing of complex terrain topographies used in granular flow experiments. Additionally, you will contribute to data acquisition and analysis during experimental campaigns. Furthermore, you will assist with winter field experiments aimed at measuring pore pressure and crack propagation in snow avalanches, which are conducted either in Davos or at the Vallée de la Sionne largescale test site. This role involves supporting the installation, testing, and calibration of advanced sensors, including pore pressure transducers and a Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) system, in collaboration with other research teams at the SLF.
You have a MSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and solid experience with 3D printing technologies and slicing software, including the development or customization of slicing algorithms. Strong CAD skills and hands-on experience with experimental setup design and sensor integration are required. You are proficient in programming (e.g., Python), with experience in GIS software. You have excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams. Furthermore, you are fluent in English and in at least one of the Swiss national language.
Please send your complete application to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Prof. Johan Gaume, e-mail johan.gaume@slf.ch, will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. WSL is committed to diversity and inclusion as core values. We actively promote equality and foster an open, inclusive work environment.
