PhD student position to study Theileria‑induced host cell transformation
University of Bern (Vetsuisse Faculty and Bern Center for Precision Medicine) offers a PhD position to investigate Theileria‑induced host cell transformation. The project focuses on DNA replication and repair as potential therapeutic targets for livestock health.
Project Overview
Theileria parasites cause devastating cattle diseases that are globally widespread and economically impactful. These parasites uniquely transform host cells into continuously proliferating, cancer‑like cells. The aim of this project is to provide mechanistic insights into Theileria‑induced transformation, especially the roles of host replisome dynamics. Targeted interference with replication machinery could offer a novel therapeutic strategy against Theileria‑induced disease. This hypothesis is supported by preliminary data showing Theileria proteins localising to the host nucleus and interacting with the replication fork.
Responsibilities
* Perform molecular and cellular biology experiments to dissect Theileria‑induced transformation mechanisms.
* Use techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9, high‑content imaging, next‑generation sequencing, and cell culture models.
* Analyze DNA replication, repair, and cell‑cycle regulation in infected host cells.
* Interpret and present experimental data in manuscripts, conferences, and seminars.
Candidate Profile
* Final stage of Master’s degree or recent graduate (within the last six months).
* Strong background in molecular and cell biology with a keen interest in molecular parasitology and DNA replication biology.
* Experience with CRISPR/Cas9, high‑content imaging, next‑generation sequencing, or cell culture models is an advantage but not required.
* High motivation, teamwork, and strong scientific enthusiasm.
Employment Conditions
* Annual gross salary: CHF 50'000 – 55'000, following Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) guidelines.
* Duration: 3–4 years (typical PhD length).
* Start date: To be discussed, earliest 1 January 2026.
