Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean environment to learn, play, and develop through various tasks involving general care of the building and grounds. Bus license is preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent. Eighteen years of age or older.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Clean assigned areas of the school, including classrooms, halls, offices, restrooms, cafeteria, kitchen, gymnasium, etc., by sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, polishing floors, vacuuming, mopping, buffing floors, washing windows, cleaning chalk/whiteboards and walls, painting, replacing light bulbs, making minor repairs, dusting, etc.
2. Sweep walks and entrances and pick up debris on the grounds.
3. Wash, scrub, disinfect restrooms daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures, door panels, and drinking fountains daily.
4. Clean up spills, pick up trash, and respond to special custodial requests from faculty with supervisor approval.
5. Set up, take down, and move furniture, shelving, and partitions as assigned.
6. Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to the proper authority.
7. Clean and polish metal works such as hand railings.
8. Be responsible for locking doors and windows, turning out lights, and securing the building as assigned.
9. Requisition custodial supplies and equipment, assist in maintaining inventory.
10. Check daily that all exit doors are open and panic bars are functioning during building occupancy hours.
11. Maintain high ethical standards and confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
12. Assist in greeting and directing visitors appropriately.
13. Participate in cleaning and routine maintenance during summer and winter breaks.
14. Participate in in-service programs as assigned.
15. Act as a friendly ambassador for Houston R-I School District.
16. Perform other tasks as deemed appropriate by the Board or Administration.
17. Maintain satisfactory attendance as per district policy.
18. Assist with seasonal grounds work such as snow, ice, and leaf removal.
19. Restock disposable items like soap and paper towels.
KEY SKILLS/CHARACTERISTICS:
* Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals in English.
* Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations with units of American measurement.
* Physical requirements include:
o Moderate to extensive physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs., occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
o Ability to lift and move furniture, desks, shelving, staging, and cleaning supplies.
o Operate cleaning equipment like buffers, scrubbers, and vacuum cleaners.
o Climb ladders, stretch, bend for cleaning, repairs, painting, and roof/gutter maintenance.
o Walk within the school building and grounds.
o Work primarily in a standing position.
o Possible exposure to bodily fluids during cleaning due to student injury or illness.
