IOM’s Department of Media and Communications (DMC) is based in Geneva and Manila and provides advice and support on media and public information to IOM Headquarters and missions worldwide. The department is responsible for direct media relations with the Geneva press corps, administers IOM’s global social media accounts and website, manages content submitted from around the world, and oversees institutional branding and information campaigns.
Under the overall supervision of the Director of DMC and the direct supervision of the Editor in Chief, the Social Media and News Associate will support internal communication processes across the Organization.
Responsibilities
Support the news of the organization, including cross‑cutting initiatives in the Department of Media and Communications, by drafting content and other engaging materials.
Contribute to the development and implementation of IOM’s editorial strategy (news and social media).
Draft online content and prepare inputs for campaigns delivered across various platforms, such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Tik Tok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Weibo and other emerging platforms.
Facilitate the management of all IOM’s social media accounts by using analytics tools to measure performance and provide guidance to help strategic social media decisions.
Draft engaging news and social media content.
Gather, prepare and disseminate news updates where required.
Draft relevant content in accordance with audiences’ needs and latest trends for social media and news.
Assist, as needed, in crafting high quality news content, editing and proofreading of daily communication materials.
Provide editorial and technical support across IOM missions and regional offices, Global Offices and HQ.
Work closely with national and international media to provide approved content and other news and information.
Liaise with IOM missions worldwide, and other partner organisations, primarily the UN, to share information that promotes IOM visibility.
Monitor and provide updates on trending news, breaking news, and other key developments.
Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree in Digital Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or
University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
Minimum of three years’ experience in marketing with emphasis on digital/social media and/or news;
Proven experience in building and sustaining strong relationships with peer groups, UN agencies and NPOs;
Working knowledge and experience leveraging social media and news in support of larger integrated campaigns within the United Nations or NGO sector.
Skills
Strong understanding of migration issues;
Excellent research, writing, communication and analytical skills;
Proficient in digital and social media across paid platforms, specifically Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Tik Tok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Weibo and other emerging platforms;
Strong understanding of social media analytics, tools and platforms with the ability to interpret data and adjust strategies accordingly;
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to adapt content for different audiences and platforms;
Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines;
Knowledge of the broad range of migration‑related subject areas dealt with by the Organization;
Knowledge of UN and bilateral donor programming;
Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written);
Good understanding of communication campaigns and tools, including engaging audiences via social media and other digital channels;
Practical experience of digital content production tools such as design and video editing software;
Excellent level of computer literacy;
Strong organizational skills;
Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a diverse environment;
Able to work flexible hours, based on the need for content and news to be made available within specific times.
Languages
All staff members in all categories are required to be fluent in one of IOM’s official languages (English, French, and Spanish). For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage. Proficiency will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
