Overview
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland, focusing on future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and basic science. The Laboratory of Radiochemistry’s Isotope and Target Chemistry Group conducts innovative research on radionuclide production, radiochemical separations, nuclear data, target and source development, and the behaviour of radionuclides relevant to advanced reactor technologies and nuclear medicine.
Responsibilities
The PhD student will work on the PROACTIVE Project (Production of RadiOlanthanides for Advancing Cancer Therapy). Key tasks include:
* Developing and optimizing large‑scale production and purification methods for Auger‑electron and beta‑emitting radiolanthanides at the PSI Injector II cyclotron, SINQ and partner facilities.
* Measuring production yields and determining side products.
* Investigating lanthanide separation methodologies using complexing agents and chromatographic resins.
* Enrolling in the Doctoral Program in Chemistry at the University of Bern, teaching duties, presenting research at conferences, publishing in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals, and co‑supervising students.
Qualifications
* Master’s degree in analytical or inorganic chemistry, or a related discipline.
* Motivated, hands‑on, and eager to work experientially on a challenging interdisciplinary topic.
* Previous experience in radiochemistry or nuclear science is an asset but not required.
* Excellent collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary and international environment.
* Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
