Commissioning Technician
Join Innovative Refrigeration Systems, Inc. as a full‑time Commissioning Technician. This role reports to the Vice President of Construction within the Engineering/Service departments. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of industrial ammonia refrigeration, electrical power and controls, and full responsibility for commissioning processes across team and site safety, controls/PLC engineering, additional technicians, refrigerant loading, power initiation and mechanical system interfaces.
Job Role
As a Commissioning Technician, you will set up, test, and validate ammonia refrigeration systems, ensuring installation aligns with design specifications and safety standards.
Key Duties
Lead commissioning of new and retrofitted industrial refrigeration systems for food, beverage, general industry, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and refrigerated storage facilities ranging from 500 HP to 10,000 HP.
Manage risk and safety for start‑ups with ammonia, CO₂, and Freon equipment.
Apply all work safety policies and lead engineering and technician teams.
Oversee initial commissioning of compressors, recirculators, pumps, chillers, evaporators, condensers, freezers, and all customer processes; work with electrical engineering teams as lead engineer.
Provide customer training after commissioning is completed.
Meet with customers/owners to transfer plant operations and continue support to the in‑house aftermarket team.
Requirements
10+ years of industrial refrigeration experience.
Field experience with start‑ups of CO₂ cascade systems, single & multi‑stage ammonia and Freon systems.
Universal EPA certification.
RETA 1 & RETA 2 certification.
Commissioning of refrigeration equipment and complete industrial/commercial systems.
Troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and control system issues.
Failure analysis of mechanical parts and electrical components.
Minimize commissioning issues and reduce start‑up delays.
Willingness to travel full‑time on a 10‑day on / 4‑day off rotational schedule.
Excellent physical condition: climbing ladders, wearing respirators, 10‑12‑hour days, occasional heavy lifting.
Pre‑employment drug, felony, and motor‑vehicle record screening required.
Must wear a respirator and pass a fit test.
Preferences
Commissioning school training from Frick/Johnson Controls, GE, Bitzer, or similar.
