PhD Student for Experiments with Dense Coulomb Clouds

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. The Electron Beam Instrumentation Group is looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD Student to measure the spectral content of coherent radiation emitted by relativistic electron beams. These measurements, in combination with state-of-the-art numerical modeling, will allow us to understand the fundamental physics in dense clouds of charged particles, including the pairwise Coulomb interactions.

Your tasks

* Set up a spectrometer to measure coherent radiation emitted by electron beams
* Measure the dependence of the spectrum on the accelerator set-up
* Use this experimental data, in conjunction with numerical models, to understand the interactions in dense coulomb clouds
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers
* Present the results at conferences and workshops, and prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications

Your profile

* Master’s degree in physics or engineering
* Strong experimental skills
* Knowledge of accelerator physics is an additional benefit
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
* Strong communication and writing skills
