We are looking for an in-house Legal Counsel for our Zurich office to provide holistic legal support to Swiss Re's Corporate Solutions (CorSo) Alternative Risk Transfer business in Europe. The Legal Counsel position reports to the Head Corporate Solutions Legal Europe and serves as a legal advisor for CorSo's Europe regional Legal team.
About The Role
You will advise Swiss Re's alternative risk transfer unit (ART) on transactions and business initiatives and on a variety of legal, regulatory and governance matters. You will be closely collaborating with internal stakeholders and external parties (regulators, potential deal partners, and brokers). You will act as lead transaction lawyer and be assisted by team members in other European jurisdictions. You will partner and collaborate with various regional and functional stakeholders within Swiss Re (Legal teams, Compliance, Finance, Operations or Underwriting) to ensure holistic assessment and mitigation of risks.
Key Responsibilities Also Include
Draft and transaction documents for ART (such as fronting agreements, reinsurance agreements, collateral agreements) and advise on/negotiate terms
Provide pragmatic legal advice designed to enable and support regional business growth in compliance with appliable state and insurance law and regulations, while clearly articulating legal risks and opportunities
Support in structuring transactions and advise on licensing and regulatory aspects in relation to ART transactions
Lead legal review of transactions (such as indemnified and fronted insurance policy transactions), including ensuring regulatory compliance
Providing legal support for internal group projects and strategic initiatives in relation to ART
Foster and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external clients and outside counsel (as needed)
Monitoring legal and regulatory trends affecting relevant business areas
Conduct internal presentations and trainings on legal topics
Act as lead counsel for selected (often cross-functional) projects or initiatives, with the assistance of other team members in other jurisdictions
Applying legal practices and controls that comply with Group guidelines, local corporate governance practice, statutory requirements and applicable insurance regulations for CorSo regional entities
About The Team
In this position, you will be a part of the regional legal team supporting Corporate Solutions (CorSo) across Europe. We are ten lawyers, primarily located in Zurich and other European branch offices of Swiss Re. Your role will be largely transactional, and your client will be Corporate Solutions' ART unit. In our team, you will be close to decision makers and directly see the results of your work. ART specializes in creating alternative risk transfer solutions and large bespoke structured transactions.

You are a proactive and solution-oriented professional who thrives in fast-paced environments, enjoys working both independently and collaboratively, and is eager to learn and open to challenges. You communicate effectively and build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, including internal teams, counterparties, and law firms. With high personal integrity and strong ethical standards, you bring sound judgment to your legal work.
Minimum of 7 years legal experience in a large law firm setting or financial services, organization
Admitted to the bar
Deep experience in drafting and advising on complex agreements with large corporates dealing with credit risk, insurance risk transfer, and the use of guarantees, letters of credit, and trust accounts
Ability to draft and advise on agreements for unique circumstances and/or new types of (re)insurance agreements
Sound judgment and proven experience to advise clients, and draft agreements for unique circumstances or new types of (re)insurance arrangements
Experience regarding the regulation of EU direct insurance including credit risk mitigants for reinsurance and the use of captive (re)insurers preferred
Understanding of insurance coverages, especially basic property, liability and professional indemnity coverages
Ability to identify, research, and analyze complex issues, even in unclear situations, and clearly summarize findings for senior leaders
Strong presentation skills, with Word and Power Point proficiency
Speak and write in English and German fluently, other languages are a plus
Experience with offshore captive or special purpose (re)insurers is a plus
Role
For Switzerland, the base salary range for this position is between 132,000 and 198,000 CHF (for a full-time role). The specific salary offered considers:
the requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role
the applicant's own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience.
