Postdoctoral Researcher (80%)
The Human‑Centred Computing Group, at the Institute of Informatics of the HES‑SO Valais‑Wallis University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland, is an interdisciplinary research group consisting of computer and social scientists. We are looking for two postdoctoral researchers to join our team for the project “Beyond novelty: Everyday AI use in medical education and practice”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
The project has two interrelated parts: (1) the integration of AI‑based technologies into lecturing practices and classroom interaction in medical environments (e.g., in radiology), and (2) decision‑making procedures in hospital settings, emphasizing how AI‑based technologies are integrated into clinical workflows and professional reasoning.
The successful candidates will have the opportunity to conduct in‑depth ethnographic research in a rich interdisciplinary environment between the Institute of Informatics of the HES‑SO Valais‑Wallis and several departments of the cantonal hospital in Lausanne (CHUV), including the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Department. Candidates will contribute to fieldwork, data analysis, and the dissemination of findings through publications and presentations.
Conduct ethnographic fieldwork in medical education and clinical settings.
Collect, organise, and analyse qualitative data, including audiovisual materials.
Contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations.
Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary research teams at HES‑SO Valais‑Wallis and CHUV.
Participate in project meetings, dissemination activities, and academic events.
Selection Criteria
PhD in sociology or a related field (e.g., science and technology studies, educational sciences, pedagogy, human–computer interaction, anthropology, sociolinguistics), with a strong interest in technology, healthcare, and/or AI.
Alternatively, PhD in computer science or a related technical field with a strong background and serious interest in the social sciences.
Familiarity with key theoretical and methodological approaches in the field.
Ability to conduct fieldwork independently and to produce scientific publications and conference presentations.
Excellent command of English, spoken and written.
Experience in ethnomethodological and/or conversation‑analytic research, particularly in healthcare, higher education, or technology‑related contexts.
Good command of French (CEFR level B1 or higher).
