The Position
We are seeking an organized, detail-oriented Learning Commons Assistant to support the work of the Learning Commons Leader and maintain the operations of the library.
Key Responsibilities
* Library Operations & Systems Management
o Destiny Automation: Expertly utilize the Follett Destiny system to manage daily circulation, maintain accurate patron records, and generate essential overdue and transaction reports.
o Cataloging & Processing: Receive and process new acquisitions with high attention to detail. This includes managing MARC records, printing barcodes and spine labels, and ensuring all resources are shelf-ready.
o Collection Maintenance: Assist in maintaining a high-quality collection by identifying series gaps, managing duplicates, and supporting the weeding and annual inventory processes to ensure consistency and efficiency.
o Digital Resource Support: Assist the Librarian in promoting and maintaining access to the library’s suite of online resources and databases.
* Instructional & Student Support
o Information Literacy: Use cataloging and search systems efficiently to help students and teachers locate specific materials for research or leisure reading.
o Supervision & Environment: Partner with the Librarian to supervise the library space, redirecting student behavior as needed to maintain a warm, friendly, and productive environment.
o Class Visit Management: Lead the checkout process during busy class visits and provide direct assistance to students when the Librarian is teaching or unavailable.
o Special Events: Support the planning, promotion, and execution of library events and literacy activities (e.g., Book Weeks, author visits, reading challenges).
o Visual Environment: Design and maintain engaging displays and signage that promote the collection and keep the community informed of library news.
o Volunteer Coordination: Support the library volunteer program by assigning tasks, maintaining clear communication, and helping plan volunteer recognition events.
* Programming, Promotion & Outreach
o Special Events: Support the planning, promotion, and execution of library events and literacy activities (e.g., Book Weeks, author visits, reading challenges).
o Visual Environment: Design and maintain engaging displays and signage that promote the collection and keep the community informed of library news.
o Volunteer Coordination: Support the library volunteer program by assigning tasks, maintaining clear communication, and helping plan volunteer recognition events.
* Administrative & Professional Support
o Scheduling: Assist in maintaining the master calendar of library activities to ensure smooth transitions between classes and events.
o General Administration: Perform various administrative duties as requested to support the overall mission of the library and the school.
Requirements
* Technical Proficiency: Prior experience with library automation systems (Destiny preferred) and an understanding of MARC records.
* Organizational Prowess: Ability to manage physical inventory and digital data with a high degree of accuracy.
* Interpersonal Skills: A "mentor mindset" when working with students and a collaborative spirit when supporting faculty and volunteers.
* Adaptability: Comfortable shifting between technical cataloging tasks and active student supervision in a fast-paced environment.
