This position has a grade of 12 and reports to the R&D Unit Lead.
Your role and responsibilities
In this role, you will lead and support the R&D Power Electronics and Components team within our Global Competence Center in Switzerland. You will focus on designing and developing ABB's Medium Voltage Drives used across industries such as marine, renewables, and metals. As part of the R&D management team, you will ensure technical excellence, project delivery, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to advance high-power converter technologies.
The work model is hybrid (#LI-hybrid). This role contributes to the Motion System Drives division in Switzerland. Your main responsibilities include:
* Leading and supporting the R&D team by setting targets, managing performance, fostering team spirit, and promoting collaboration and continuous development.
* Driving internal processes such as resource planning, budgeting, and monitoring R&D projects to ensure timely and cost-effective results.
* Providing technical guidance in the design, validation, and qualification of high-power converter hardware, ensuring quality, reliability, and safety standards are met throughout the product lifecycle.
* Collaborating with product and project managers on effort estimation, development strategies, and innovation, shaping technology and product roadmaps, and securing intellectual property.
Qualifications for the role
* Solid academic background, such as MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field, with experience in high-power electronics and Medium Voltage converter hardware design.
* In-depth experience in developing and testing Power Electronic Building Blocks, from conceptual design to certification.
* Knowledge in designing and validating complete power drive systems, considering electrical, thermal, and mechanical requirements.
* Effective leadership skills to motivate a skilled R&D team.
* Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate efforts, manage priorities, and deliver results within budget and deadlines.
* Motivation for applied R&D, with a structured and pragmatic approach to problem-solving and innovation.
* Fluent in English, both written and spoken; German skills are a plus.
