Electronics Engineer - HL-LHC Instrumentation Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Electronics Engineer to join our team and work on the development of instrumentation systems for the HL-LHC project. As an expert in electronic design, you will be responsible for the acceptance and calibration of electronic cards, debugging and repairing cards that fail reception tests, and assisting in the installation and commissioning of the complete instrumentation chains.

This role offers the opportunity to gain experience working on large-scale installations and to follow the acceptance, commissioning, and final deployment of electronic systems. Key tasks include inspection of electronic card production for defects, performing electrical measurements on production batches, validating electronic cards using automated test benches, developing and maintaining quality assurance documentation, preparing electronic racks for installation, and validating the full instrumentation chain.

You will have the opportunity to propose improvements and update FPGA software, manage procurement of electronic components and spares, and upgrade automated test benches. Additionally, you may be involved in PCB analog/digital design, proposing improvements and updating FPGA software, managing procurement of electronic components and spares, and upgrading automated test benches.

To be successful in this role, you should have experience with PCB design (Altium Designer), including mixed analog/digital/FPGA circuits with sensors. You should also have design and prototyping skills for analog and digital circuits, including FPGA programming (VHDL), and proficiency in English (spoken and written).

The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience after graduation, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of professional experience after graduation. You should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

In this role, you will work in radiation areas, perform underground interventions, and possess a valid driving license. The contract duration is 24 months, with possible extension up to 36 months, and the target start date is September 2025.

We offer a monthly stipend between CHF 6287 and CHF 6911 (net of tax), coverage by CERN's health scheme and pension fund, additional allowances and travel expenses depending on circumstances, 30 days of paid leave per year, and training at CERN and language courses.
