TheData Center Manager is accountable for supervising the functionality, upkeep, and protection of the organization’s data center facilities. This position entails managing the physical infrastructure, guaranteeing system availability, and leading a team of engineers and technical staff. The role involves close collaboration with IT leadership to execute strategies that align with business objectives while maintaining peak levels of performance, resilience, and security.
This role ensures service quality by overseeing providers through clearly defined KPIs, SLAs, and consistent measurement and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
* Operate, monitor, and maintain all data center systems, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and safety of IT/OT infrastructure.
* Implement and uphold global Data Center standards, while maintaining accountability for regional operations.
* Serve as the main contact for all IT infrastructure matters at the Visp site, liaising with external IT vendors and central infrastructure functions.
* Collaborate as SPOC with onsite mechanical and facility teams (e.g., power, HVAC, fire protection, security) to ensure continuous readiness of the Visp data center.
* Delegate tasks and provide direction to the Data Center Operations team.
* Shape and maintain the global Data Center roadmap and strategy in alignment with organizational needs.
* Define structured cabling and labeling guidelines and select appropriate cable types and layouts.
* Design, review, and test the technical disaster recovery plan for the site, ensuring regular updates.
* Oversee the full lifecycle of IT infrastructure components, managing associated risks.
* Plan and execute data center migrations or expansions, including capacity forecasting and risk evaluations.
* Lead efforts for automation, consistency, and ongoing optimization of infrastructure systems.
* Ensure existing infrastructure is well-documented, sustainable, and adheres to established practices.
* Guarantee compliance with all relevant security and governance policies related to infrastructure.
* Monitor operational performance of the data center and swiftly resolve issues, optimizing for uptime and reliability.
* Stay informed on emerging innovations and trends in data center operations, identifying opportunities for enhancement.
Qualifications & Skills:
* Solid understanding of data center components including servers, storage, networks, power, and cooling systems.
* Hands-on expertise with VMware vSphere, Windows Server, Linux Server, storage technologies, and backup systems.
* Familiarity with fundamental networking concepts.
* Proven experience managing data center initiatives such as expansions, relocations, and system upgrades, with robust project leadership abilities.
* Awareness of compliance and operational standards like ISO 27001, HIPAA, and GDPR.
* Certifications such as CDCP or CDCMP are advantageous.
* Understanding of infrastructure security standards and hardening methodologies.
* Demonstrated experience in standardizing and simplifying infrastructure environments.
* Ability to lead change—both cultural and technical—within an IT organization.
* Competence in identifying and mitigating risks in real-time.
* Background in pharmaceutical or similarly regulated sectors is a plus.
* Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying technical information clearly to various stakeholders.
* Fluency in English required; German language skills are preferred.
* Experience in large, international organizations; typically 5–10 years at a senior level.
