Overview
Open rank Professorship in History of the Middle Ages with consideration of digital Methods at University of Bern International. Beginning 1 February, 2027. Full-time position in the History of the Middle Ages.
Responsibilities
* Represent the entire spectrum of medieval history (approximately 500–1500) in research and teaching and promote the use of digital methods in research and teaching.
* Teach a broad range of subjects and methods for 4 (assistant professorship) or 8 (associate and full professorship) hours per week and supervise BA, MA and doctoral theses.
* Participate in academic self-administration and collaborate with other disciplines.
* actively participate in the development of trans-epochal research clusters at the History Department, in particular in a leading role in the "Digital History" cluster.
* Involvement in the interdisciplinary Master’s programme "Digital Humanities" at the Walter Benjamin Kolleg is expected.
Qualifications
* At least two areas of expertise in European medieval history, evidenced by internationally recognized publications.
* A broad coverage of European history, particularly the High and Late Middle Ages, taking into account interregional interrelationships and contact zones (desirable).
* Knowledge of digital methods is expected; concrete proposals for new research projects involving digital methods are desirable.
* Sound knowledge of German (required for teaching and administration); good knowledge of French, English and other languages desirable.
* For senior levels: postdoctoral qualification or equivalent; experience in acquiring third-party funding; ability to pursue tenure-track or permanent appointments depending on qualifications.
Appointment and Conditions
Depending on qualifications, the position will be filled at the level of assistant professor with tenure track, associate professor, or full professor. Requirements for appointment include an above-average doctoral thesis, teaching experience, a habilitation project for assistant level, and postdoctoral qualification plus third-party funding experience for higher levels. There is prospect of permanent employment and conversion to an associate professorship upon successful evaluation.
