Spatial Database and Scientific Software Engineer | 80% - 100% The Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach is a non-profit foundation for ornithology and bird protection. It monitors the native bird population, researches their way of life, and campaigns for endangered birds. It cares for injured birds and bird conservation. The Swiss Ornithological Institute employs over 200 people throughout Switzerland.
The Scientific IT department supports employees of the Swiss Ornithological Institute in the design and implementation of scientific projects that require special IT solutions. The department develops software, supplies and maintains the IT infrastructure for research, and offers IT-related training. The department is also responsible for spatial databases and their interfaces.

Spatial Database and Scientific Software Engineer | 80% - 100%
Development and maintenance of the spatial database.
Maintenance, further development, and new development of software for data collection and presentation.
Expansion of a uniform web solution for geodata and its meta information.
Advising and supporting Scientific IT on hardware and software issues.
Support for the operation and further development of scientific IT services.
Additional tasks as agreed with your supervisor.
Your profile
Training in the field of “geo“ informatics, preferably an MSc in geoinformatics, data science, or a related subject.
Very good knowledge of geoinformatics with a focus on Postgis databases and open source map servers.
Very good knowledge of at least one of the following languages: German, French, or English.
Interest in open source.
Team player who can also work independently and in a structured manner.
Competent communication of complex IT issues, even to people outside the field (biologists).
Experience in full-stack programming, including SQL databases.
Knowledge of another programming language such as Rust or C++ (Java/MS Access, Ruby).
Interest in learning the R analysis language.
Experience with artificial intelligence (e.g., neural networks) and pattern recognition.
Interest in solving environmental science problems with the help of new technologies.
