Offer Description The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. The Accelerator Simulation and Advanced Modeling Group is looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD Student to investigate the fundamental physics of Dense Coulomb Clouds (CCs). This project combines state-of-the-art numerical modelling with experimental validation at leading facilities like Argonne National Laboratory, SwissFEL and EuPRAXIA.
PhD student for Computational Methods in Dense Coulomb Clouds
Develop and implement advanced computational models to simulate the evolution of CCs, incorporating particle-to-particle interactions and collisional effects, spanning from the classical relativistic regime into quantum
Analyse simulation results and experimental data to understand the impact of density perturbations, thermalisation, and entropy on beam properties
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers
Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computational Science and Engineering
Strong computational skills including HPC, particle-in-cell methods
Knowledge of Kokkos is and additional benefit
Good knowledge of plasma and quantum physics incl. correlated systems
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Strong communication and writing skills
