Overview
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. PSI is committed to training future generations, and about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. PSI employs around 2300 people. For the Syn Flow group at the Femtochemistry laboratory we are looking for a PhD Student in operando microfluidic reactors.
Position: PhD Student in operando microfluidic reactors — Doctoral, 6417-00, 100% allocation
Application deadline: 16 October 2025
Responsibilities
* Design microfluidic reactors for operando studies of photocatalysts, including hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), hydrogenation reactions, and decomposition of organic pollutants
* Perform experiments in PSI laboratories and at synchrotron radiation facilities, and conduct data processing and analysis
* Optimize and automate reaction parameters; correlate structural data with the materials’ catalytic performance
Qualifications
* You have a master’s degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or related field
* You are able to perform experimental and theoretical work, seek new solutions, and work independently
* You have a background in heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, or microfluidics
* You understand the principles behind the different spectroscopic techniques
* You have experience in scientific programming using Python for data analysis
* You can integrate easily into an interdisciplinary research team and have strong communication skills
