The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is hiring a Senior Business Analyst / Developer within the Risk Management – Risk IT department. This role is based in Basel, however, we welcome applications from candidates worldwide. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members. The position is a fixed‑term of three years, with the application deadline on Wednesday, 1 July at end of day.
Purpose of the Job
As an integral part of the Risk Management team, the Senior Business Analyst/Developer will contribute to the Bank’s IT strategy by specifying and building software to support the financial risk domain. This includes engineering new and existing solutions using microservices and containerisation to strengthen financial risk management through efficient and robust business processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Build innovative IT solutions to enhance financial risk management.
- Collaborate with experts to design systems supporting risk and balance sheet management.
- Drive the Bank's IT architecture evolution through cutting‑edge technologies.
Principal Accountabilities
- Maintain and develop Risk Management’s IT systems within the Bank’s overall IT strategy.
- Specify, develop, implement, document and test Risk IT applications, interfaces, services, and processes used to measure, manage, and control risk across risk types and the value of Bank’s balance sheet.
- Shape and achieve the Bank’s IT architecture strategy by contributing to the development of the new foundational IT infrastructure and integrating new products into Risk Management’s micro‑service architecture.
- Provide 24/7 production support for critical systems, ensuring stability, reliability, and continuous improvement based on user feedback.
- Specify and design solutions in cooperation with the Risk Management business, leveraging experience from the financial services domain.
- Support end users in Risk Management in the development and maintenance of business tools and small applications.
- Manage projects, including administrative and reporting tasks, using the Bank’s agile project management methodology.
- Provide expert advice to Risk Management on application design, architecture, and strategic technology issues.
- Work closely with Risk Management teams to ensure business applications effectively support risk management and balance sheet valuation.
- Collaborate with internal departments, including IT, Banking, and Corporate Security, on system design, integration, IT security, and change management.
- Build and maintain a professional network with peers at central banks, international financial institutions, and service providers to stay informed of best practices and emerging technologies.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- University degree in computer science, science, or mathematical discipline, or relevant experience.
- Experienced in software development and/or architecture related IT roles.
- Hands‑on experience in building and consuming APIs, and working with messaging‑based architectures.
- Familiarity with microservices and containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
- Prior experience in the financial services or banking industry is advantageous, as is knowledge of Python programming.
- Expert‑level knowledge of C#/.NET, Java, or C++ with strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and design patterns.
- Proficiency in working with relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, or Sybase, and experience designing reliable IT solutions in collaboration with business users.
- A proactive, open‑minded approach to learning and adapting to changing requirements, combined with a passion for continuous improvement.
- Strong collaboration skills, with proven experience contributing to team‑oriented environments using agile development methodologies.
- Excellent English writing skills, enabling clear communication of business specifications and technical documentation.
