Institute of Geography (GIUB)
Start of employment: 01.10.2025 or by agreement
Employment is fixed term for 1 year
The Cloud Dynamics group affiliated with the Institute of Geography (GIUB) and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR) at the University of Bern invites applications for a Research and Field Campaign Assistant. This position is part of an SNSF funded Starting Grant project (PERISCOPE) and supports the research of a Postdoc in his project aimed at constraining precipitation efficiency of large-scale deep cloud systems using water isotope observations.
The research of the Cloud Dynamics team focusses on process-based investigations of the fascinating and complex coupling between clouds and the atmospheric circulation. The cloud-circulation coupling shapes the life cycle and surface impact of large-scale deep clouds systems and thereby affects our weather and climate.
Tasks
* Dataset compilation: Aggregating and formatting IASI
satellite data and campaign-based observational datasets into a uniform,
structured format, suitable for long-term analysis and archival. Requires
basic programming skills in Python and Bash.
* Trajectory simulations: Running and managing backward
trajectories with the LAGRANTO tool to identify the origins of coherent
subsiding airstreams under the supervision and with tools provided by the Postdoc.
* Event analysis: Using visualisation tools the Postdoc will provide, the Assistant will
generate vertical and horizontal meteorological cross-sections for selected
past extreme events. These plots will help characterize the upstream
environment of heatwaves associated with moisture transport and cloud
formation.
* Field campaign support: Assisting with preparatory logistics
for a field measurement campaign (NAWDIC, https://www.nawdic.kit.edu/deutsch/index.php) planned for winter 2025/26 (mainly in February 2026), including communication, resource planning, and data management templates, post-processing and some post-campaign laboratory work as well as the possibility for participating in the campaign in February 2026.
Requirements
Master Student or MSc in Climate Science who recently finished their studies:
* Basic experience with Linux environments, Bash and Python
* Experience and agility in handling large datasets
* Basic experience in conducting field observations and laboratory analysis
* Interest in dynamical meteorology and case study analysis
* Motivated and skilled to produce scientifically meaningful and aesthetic visualisations of meteorological data for the analysis of selected case studies
* Open-minded, reliable, clear in communication, well-organised and flexible personality who is eager to learn new concepts and tools
* Fluent in English, German and/or French are a plus
* Ideally has a drivers licence
Our commitment
In the Cloud Dynamics team, we wish to create a respectful and supportive environment that fosters creativity for young talented scientists to develop their own ideas. We value diversity of backgrounds and identities as an enriching and necessary aspect of research and it is our priority to make all group members feel welcome, respected and supported.
