Introduction
Do you have the networking engineering experience to help us operate and monitor these networks to ensure the quality of service delivered to our users?
The Communication Systems (CS) Group in CERN’s Information Technology (IT) Department is responsible for high-performance networks supporting CERN’s accelerators, experiments, and physics programme. These networks include a mission-critical network for the accelerator infrastructure, two high-capacity data centre networks with multiple high-bandwidth links to GÉANT, ESnet, and international partners, as well as a campus network with a controller-based Wi-Fi system supporting over 5,000 access points and up to 10,000 devices, fully integrated with eduroam.
Functions
As a Computing Engineer in the Communication Systems Group within the IT Department, you will:
* Participate in the operation and development of CERN’s network infrastructures;
* Provide expert advice for debugging and troubleshooting complex problems;
* Implement or propose developments for simplified and scalable network operations;
* Interpret users’ needs, design suitable connectivity solutions, and oversee their implementation;
* Follow up on technical issues and feature requests with equipment vendors to ensure CERN’s needs are met.
Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field.
Experience:
* Experience in debugging and troubleshooting networking issues, from physical layer to routing protocols, including Wi-Fi radio-frequency issues if relevant;
* Proven experience with SNMP and other network monitoring protocols;
* Experience using, configuring, and operating network monitoring systems (e.g., Nagios, Spectrum) is advantageous;
* Proven experience in designing and operating campus or data centre networks at scale;
* Experience in wireless network design and operation is a plus;
* Experience maintaining relationships with manufacturers;
* Experience with software development and scripting languages (Python or Perl) is a plus.
