Job Description
Introduction:
We are looking for a mechanical systems technicalengineer to join a multidisciplinary team developing and upgrading some of the most advanced beam-intercepting devices in the world. From the High-Luminosity LHC upgrades to key facilities like n_TOF, AD, and HI-ECN3, you will play a hands-on role in projects that push the boundaries of engineering and science.
You will join the Accelerator Systems Department ( SY ), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.
As part of the Sources Targets Interactions Group, and specifically the Targets, Collimators, and Dumps Section, you will help deliver safe, efficient, and high-performance solutions for some of the most intense particle beams on Earth.
Functions:
As a mechanical systems technical engineer, you will play a key role in the design, construction, upgrade, and maintenance of beam-intercepting devices across CERN’s accelerator complex.
After training, you will contribute to both hands-on technical work and coordination of major projects, including future facilities beyond the HL-LHC era.
Your responsibilities will include:
Lead the assembly, installation, testing, and maintenance of LHC collimators and other key systems;
Support the design and production of precision components and tools in collaboration with engineers and technicians;
Operate and maintain beam-intercepting devices and related infrastructure;
Develop tools and solutions for safe maintenance in radiation zones, including remote handling systems;
Investigate equipment issues and implementing repairs and design improvements;
Take progressive responsibility for target systems and test areas like n_TOF and AD, including their integration and optimization;
Manage technical documentation, procedures, and specifications;
Participate in procurement and supplier coordination for complex systems;
Support decommissioning, inspection, and disposal of irradiated components.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.
Experience:
Required experience:
Assembly and installation of complex mechanical systems, ideally in harsh environments;
Managing complex systems and interfaces, with a focus on mechanical performance and reliability;
Design and structural analysis of mechanical structures, including systems involving robotics or remote handling;
Professional use of CAD tools (2D and 3D) to model, draft, and document mechanical components and assemblies.
Desired experience:
Working in or around radiation-controlled environments;
Technical procurement experience, including liaising with suppliers and managing specifications for complex systems.
Technical competencies:
Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation;
Production of 2D drawings and 3D models;
Specification and follow-up of technical aspects of a contract;
Design and analysis of mechanical structures.
Behavioural competencies:
Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting; taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen;
Achieving Results: defining clear objectives, milestones and deliverables before initiating work/ project; delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations;
Working in the Interest of the Organization: demonstrating motivation for own work, being enthusiastic, involved and energetic in pursuing tasks;
Communicating Effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
