Operational Director of the EPFL Epitaxy Platform (EPiX)
Mission
The primary mission of this core facility is to provide researchers and partners with access to high-performance, customer-oriented scientific equipment and service expertise in epitaxy research. A subsidiary mission is to contribute, through its own research and development activities, to advancing the platform's technology for the benefit of its users and maintaining a recognised centre of expertise.
Main Responsibilities and Tasks
* Organise and manage the core facility's operations, including finance, organisation, processes, investments and R&D.
* Implement health and safety measures related to all machines.
* Conduct metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) of III-V semiconductors and heterojunctions.
* Contribute to overall expertise in epitaxy in different material systems, working in synergy with other team members.
* Supervise staff activities and organise their missions, including service, training, maintenance and research & development projects.
* Prepare and coordinate the installation of instruments, manage instrument maintenance and operation.
* Implement strategy and improvement measures prepared periodically with the Academic Director and the board.
* Prepare financial planning, supervise financial reporting and controls for the board and the finance responsible of the Vice Presidency for Academic Affairs.
* Contribute to the reputation of research conducted at EPFL, through successful execution of primary and subsidiary missions.
* Ensure user satisfaction, through availability of high-performance, customer-oriented equipment and services.
* Propose doctoral courses and contribute to continuing education.
Desired Skills and Qualifications
* Extensive expertise in MOVPE of III-V semiconductors, with a proven track record in both research and practical applications.
* Experience or knowledge of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) operation and processes is highly appreciated.
* Exceptional leadership abilities, capable of managing and inspiring a diverse team working with various epitaxy tools to ensure top-tier research and innovation.
* Strategic vision with the capability to drive long-term growth and success.
* Fluent command of English, both written and spoken, to effectively communicate in an international work environment.
* Outstanding interpersonal and collaborative skills, fostering a positive, results-driven team culture.
* PhD in a relevant field is highly preferred; however, candidates with significant industry experience and practical expertise may also be considered.
