About the Role
We’re seeking a Snowflake Platform Engineer who embodies governance discipline, automation‑first design, and systems‑level thinking. This role is pivotal in shaping a stable, secure, and scalable Snowflake environment that underpins our enterprise data operations. You’ll act as both a guardian of governance and an enabler of reliable data delivery.
Core Attributes
* 1. Governance‑Faithful, Systems‑Level Thinking
o Aligns rigorously with data governance and architecture principles.
o Views the Snowflake account as an interconnected ecosystem of roles, objects, networks, and pipelines.
o Proactively surfaces policy or architecture gaps and engages subject‑matter experts rather than taking isolated shortcuts.
Interview Signal: Can diagram an account topology and role hierarchy, explain key policy decisions, and describe escalation paths.
* 2. Process Discipline & Automation‑First
o Treats all platform changes as code, complete with reviews, approvals, and rollback mechanisms.
o Prefers automation, CI/CD, and runbooks over manual console operations.
o Designs for repeatability, auditability, and minimal manual variance.
Interview Signal: Demonstrates a GitOps workflow with drift detection and rollback stories; references IaC tools such as Terraform or similar modules.
* 3. Reliability Bias & Boundary Setting
o Prioritizes stability, consistency, and cost control over convenience.
o Maintains strict SLOs for availability, latency, and task reliability.
o Defends budget and security boundaries — knows when to say “no.”
Interview Signal: Shares examples of resisting unsafe shortcuts with metrics that justify the decision.
* 4. Precise Access & Security Posture
o Implements least‑privilege access with clean role hierarchies and future grants.
o Integrates SSO/SCIM, network policies, and IP allowlists to ensure secure exposure.
o Manages secrets, keys, and integrations with strong rotation and audit practices.
Interview Signal: Whiteboards a least‑privilege model and explains external sharing and data reader safety patterns.
* 5. Diagnostic Rigor & Operational Observability
o Builds observability through dashboards and monitoring for credits, errors, latency, and query anomalies.
o Conducts structured RCAs, identifies root causes, and hardens systems to prevent recurrences.
o Leverages ACCOUNT_USAGE and INFORMATION_SCHEMA data for data‑driven insights.
Interview Signal: Walks through an incident response example with metrics, hypothesis testing, and preventive actions.
What Success Looks Like
* A Snowflake environment that’s stable, cost‑efficient, and audit‑ready.
* End‑to‑end automation for roles, warehouses, and network configurations.
* Clear governance with no orphaned access or unmanaged resources.
* Dashboards that surface actionable insights on usage, spend, and reliability.
