Spray Drying Manager (SDD / Large-Scale Systems) – API Manufacturing
Couvet, Switzerland (on-site)
BioTalent is partnered with a global pharmaceutical manufacturing organisation with a strong presence across Europe. The business operates in highly regulated environments and is known for delivering complex API and drug product manufacturing at scale.
This is a specialist role focused on spray drying at scale. We’re looking for someone with deep, hands‑on experience in spray‑dried dispersions (SDD) and large industrial spray drying systems.
You’ll take ownership of a 24/5 spray drying operation, ensuring consistent product quality, reliable output, and ongoing process optimisation. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll be expected to understand the process in detail, not just manage it from a distance.
Key Responsibilities
Spray Drying Operations
* Lead spray drying activities with full accountability for quality, yield, and throughput
* Monitor and optimise key parameters including inlet/outlet temperatures, feed rates, and moisture levels
* Deliver against production schedules in a 24/5 manufacturing environment
Quality & GMP Compliance
* Ensure all batches meet GMP and product specifications
* Work closely with QA/QC on deviations, investigations, and batch release activities
* Implement corrective and preventive actions
* Lead, train, and develop operators and technicians
* Manage shift planning and resource allocation
* Drive a strong, accountable team culture
Equipment & Maintenance
* Oversee first‑line maintenance and cleaning of spray drying equipment
* Coordinate with engineering teams for breakdowns and repairs
* Maintain accurate logs and documentation
Process Optimisation
* Analyse process data to improve efficiency, yield, and energy use
* Support scale‑up activities and process changes
Safety & Compliance
* Ensure adherence to EHS standards and GMP practices
* Lead safety briefings and incident investigations
What They’re Looking For (Non‑Negotiable)
* 10+ years’ experience in spray drying, within pharma, biotech, or chemical manufacturing
* Strong experience with Spray‑Dried Dispersions (SDD)
* Hands‑on experience with large‑scale spray drying systems (PSD45+ or equivalent industrial units)
* Proven experience managing teams in a production environment
* Strong understanding of GMP and regulated manufacturing
* Experience working with PLC/SCADA systems
Additional Requirements
* Technical background in chemical processes, industrial pharmacy, or similar
* Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills
* Comfortable working cross‑functionally with QA, QC, and Engineering
Why This Role
This is not a step‑up role, it’s for someone who already knows spray drying inside out.
You’ll have real ownership of a critical manufacturing process, with the ability to influence how it runs and improve performance across the site.
