The Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics (IPA) at ETH Zurich (http://www.ipa.phys.ethz.ch/) seeks applications for a post-doctoral researcher positions dedicated to the CMS Tracker construction and Research and Development (R&D) on monolithic silicon pixel detectors. The IPA CMS group has a broad profile, actively participating in collision physics analysis and operation and upgrade of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and plays a leading role in the construction of the pixel detector of CMS. The group is also actively involved in generic R&D of monolithic pixel detectors in collaboration with PSI, as well as in targeted R&D towards the vertex detectors at a future collider experiment, for example the FCCee. This R&D is carried out in the framework of an international project within the ECFA DRD3 collaboration. We are searching exceptional candidates at the postdoctoral level, preferably with prior research experience in Experimental Particle Physics, in particular in silicon detector development. Experience in the development of silicon pixel detectors is an additional asset.
The successful candidate is expected to make significant contributions to the CMS pixel module production at ETH, the CMS Tracker Integration and Commissioning at CERN, and upon mutual interest to contribute to the characterization and development of depleted monolithic pixel detector prototypes. Candidates will actively participate in the teaching activities of the Physics Department (approximately 20-25% of the level of effort).
Depending on the seniority of the candidate, the position can be offered at post-doctoral or at non-tenure track senior scientist level. We will offer an initial appointment of two years that can be extended up to a maximum of 6 years upon mutual satisfaction. Interested candidates should submit their applications by April 30, 2026, along with a letter of motivation, research statement, names and contact details of three referees, and a curriculum vitae, via email to ipa-cms-pd@phys.ethz.ch. Recommendation letters will be solicited from the provided contact information as appropriate. For inquiries (not applications) about the position, please contact Dr. Malte Backhaus (bmalte@phys.ethz.ch) or Prof. Rainer Wallny (rainer.wallny@phys.ethz.ch) - please mention “ETHZ CMS TRK PD:” in the subject line). The anticipated start of the contract is June 1, 2026, or later upon mutual agreement.
