Social Studies Teacher – Middle School

Location: Districtwide. Date Posted: 5/20/2026. Date Available: 08/20/2026.

Department: Teaching and Learning. Bargaining Unit Classification: Waterbury Teachers’ Association CEA-NEA. Reports To: Receives administrative direction from the Principal or other administrative official of a higher grade. FLSA Designation: Exempt.


Part I – Summary of Classification

Accountable for facilitating learning, academic achievement, and personal development by providing instruction to students. Develops and implements curriculum and lesson plans, utilizes technology, and demonstrates understanding of varying learning styles and needs of a diverse student population.


Part II – Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience:

* Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
* In addition to the checking of references and facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made prior to appointment.

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:

* Employment conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate with an 026 endorsement.
* Incumbents may be required to possess and retain a current Motor Vehicle operator’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Considerable knowledge of core curriculum areas for which the teacher is responsible, including specialized knowledge in subjects such as reading, mathematics, science, business, music, art, languages, as appropriate.
* Considerable knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods and approaches, and best practices and strategies.
* Knowledge of child development, classroom management techniques, instructional technologies, learner outcomes, learning theory, student learning styles and needs, and theories of multiple intelligences.
* Knowledge of multicultural, gender and disability fair curriculum concepts, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Scientific Research Based Interventions (SRBI), and community resources.
* Excellent listening skills; skill in classroom management, presentation, human relations, mediation, conflict management, interpersonal interactions, and maintaining reports.
* Ability and flexibility to interact effectively with students, parents, and other school staff, Administration, and community members of diverse ethnic/racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
* Ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse student populations, apply PBIS and SRBI principles, communicate orally and in writing, evaluate student performance, present evaluations to foster higher achievement, multi-task, plan and implement lesson plans aligned with District and school goals.
* Ability to provide appropriate instruction in core subjects, utilize computer and multimedia technology, work in a cooperative learning environment, and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


Part III – Position Supervises

* May direct the work of paraprofessionals.


Part IV – Essential Functions

* Advises, assists, and supervises students on internships, volunteering, and community service projects, securing training stations and employment.
* Evaluates student performance through examinations, homework, and other methods; maintains required student records, submits required reports, and facilitates District-wide testing.
* Implements goals, objectives, and standards of the District and school; develops, adapts, and updates curriculum and implements lesson plans.
* Maintains communication with parents, schedules parent conferences, recruits students into classes and specialized programs, and enrolls students using classroom databases.
* Participates in staff development and professional growth activities; mentors new teachers; maintains current teacher certifications.
* Performs classroom management duties, enforces school rules, takes disciplinary action, ensures student safety, and maintains an appropriate learning environment.
* Performs other duties such as enforcing health guidelines, coordinating co‑curricular and extracurricular activities, participating in bus, lunch, and playground duty, attending planning meetings, serving on committees, monitoring classroom budgets, providing grant‑writing information, and developing performances, presentations, and exhibits.
* Provides instruction in the core curriculum; develops instructional materials, orders supplies, collaborates with other teachers and volunteers; provides remediation as necessary and maintains instructional equipment.
* Supports special‑needs students; determines least restrictive environment, assists with IEPs, coordinates mainstreaming, and participates in Planning and Placement Teams.


Part V – Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

The position requires adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity. A physical examination may be required. Responsibilities include standing, walking, driving, lifting, pushing, pulling, and performing tasks that involve carrying light to very heavy loads. Additional environmental demands may involve exposure to noise, vibrations, chemicals, temperature changes, and other workplace hazards.
