Overview
The swiss national science foundation (SNSF)
Thousands of scientists supported by the SNSF conduct research into nature, technology, and society. Their findings form the basis for progress. Our task is to select the best research ideas in national competitions. We are committed to promoting Switzerland as a strong research location and communicating the value of research. Student assistant - analysis of research infrastructure (m/w/d)
The Long-Term Research sector is responsible at the SNSF for supporting certain research infrastructures and conducts evaluation mandates for infrastructures of national importance on behalf of the Confederation. As part of a federal mandate, it is developing a concept aimed at specifying its role in the evaluation and funding of infrastructures, complementing the efforts of higher education institutions, the Confederation, and the Academies. To support the preparation of this concept regarding the SNSF’s future responsibilities in research infrastructures, we identify model infrastructures and analyze their funding mechanisms for both development and operation.
Responsibilities
A list of approximately ten research infrastructures is established by the LTRI committee, which oversees the project at the Research Council level. For each infrastructure on this list, a “case study” analysis is conducted following a predefined framework:
* Infrastructure characterization: Scientific domains, nature of services, user base, brief history of the creation and development of the infrastructure, recent examples of supported projects and a brief presentation of their results.
* Infrastructure organization: Responsible institutions, partnerships (e.g., academic, industrial, or technological), governance and organizational chart, management and staff (organization, specializations).
* Funding: Brief history of past funding (main phases, funding sources, encountered issues and key decisions), current funding (structure, processes, and attached conditions), monitoring and reporting.
* Strategy and Development Perspectives: Brief SWOT analysis of the infrastructure, strategy and development plans, main challenges.
Qualifications
* Strong interest and sensitivity for research management, particularly in relation to research infrastructure.
* Basic training in economics and management is an asset.
* Analytical and synthesis skills, ability to design and conduct specialized interviews (case study writing).
* Working language: English.
* Master’s level education or advanced Bachelor’s level are an asset
* Basic training in economics and management is an asset.
What we offer
An exciting working environment at the interface of science, politics and international relations. The SNSF stands for equal opportunities, diversity and the promotion of innovative ideas in science. We offer you a responsible position with creative freedom, flexible working arrangements and attractive employment conditions.
Work package
We estimate that analyzing a case study takes on average 4 to 5 working days. An introductory session and an interview with infrastructure representatives are included for each case study. The person in charge of the project will support you throughout the task. We are looking for three people for this task, with a minimum of 3 infrastructures per person (12 working days). The analysis must be completed no later than October 31, 2025.
