Internship in photonic testing & generating (4 to 12 months)
Company Description
Miraex develops, manufactures and offers cutting edge ultra high precision photonic solutions for next generation sensing, and quantum networking and computing.
Miraex produces hardware to connect microwave-based quantum processors via optical networks. Our electrical and photonic circuits permit conversion between microwaves and optical photons with high performance required to work with the fragile states of quantum devices. We are an award-winning team with strong support from Innosuisse, IBM Q Network, Venture Kick, Venturelab, ESA Business Incubation Center, TOP 100 Swiss Startups, and others.
Our headquarters are in EPFL Innovation Park, close to the city of Lausanne, Switzerland on the shores of lake Geneva offering an incredible quality of life.
Job Description
Miraex is looking for an enthusiastic Photonic Test Intern to join us on our mission to develop and characterize electro-optic devices.
Are you excited about the world of quantum engineering and you would like to learn how to work with cutting-edge technologies to help solve the scaling challenges faced by today’s quantum computers? Would you like to be embedded in a multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic, fast-paced start-up environment? Are you a self-steering problem solver who is not afraid to take responsibility?
Miraex is looking for an intern in R&D for development and characterization of electrical and/or integrated optical devices, as well as the device theory that governs their operation. As a well-rounded individual with a STEM background and genuine interest in quantum technology and engineering, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects.
Roles
* Perform test activities to characterize electrical and/or optical prototype devices
* Build or adapt instrumentation installations and test benches
* Communicate measurement results in the form of presentations and reports
* Carry out theoretical calculations to predict device performance
* Perform simulations and/or calculations to inform new device designs
Your profile (mandatory)
* Experience in a lab environment
* Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and optical systems
* Rigor and care in experiment design and execution
* Interest and initiative to learn new skillsGood communication skills (written/oral) in English (French is a plus)
* Swiss/EU Citizenship or Swiss residence permit
Skills that will make the difference
* Experience with fiber optics and optical measurements
* Experience with lab equipment such as vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, function generators, power meters, etc.
* Experience and aptitude for RF/microwave circuits and/or electro-optic circuits
* Experience with simulation software for electrical or optical structures (Ansys Lumerical, Ansys HFSS, COMSOL, Sonnet, AWS Palace, LTspice, etc.)
* Prior work on theory coupled to experiment, or in quantum optics or device theory
* Computational thinking and automation skills
* Knowledge in scientific data processing and synthesis using Python
Our offer
* Being part of a fast growing investor-backed company in the very exciting and growing field of quantum computing.
* Exciting possibilities to put your knowledge into practice: work hands‑on on direct problems with partners and clients in addition to typical research and development topics.
* Highly attractive working environment, in the heart of the Lake Geneva region, Switzerland.
* We want you to flourish: you will be trained and mentored by our optical engineering and quantum engineering team members with the goal of independent working.
