Seeking to be a force for good during these critical times
The Irene M. Staehelin (IMS) Foundation, established in 2020, embodies the vision of its benefactor, Irène M. Staehelin-Schindler, to tackle today’s challenges and improve the lives of those most in need. Based in Zurich, the IMS Foundation focuses on humanitarian aid, human and women’s rights, development, and nature and species protection. With a substantial endowment to be used through 2045, the foundation is positioned to be a powerful force for good in a time of enormous challenge, change and opportunity. The IMS Foundation operates with a small, focused team, supporting a select number of partner organisations annually.
The IMS Foundation believes the philanthropic sector has a critical role in nature and species protection. To this end, the IMS Foundation is seeking a highly motivated Head of Programmes for Nature and Species Protection (HoP Nature and Species Protection). Reporting to the CEO, the HoP will design, select, and manage initiatives and cooperate closely with other Heads of Programmes to ensure that proper human, women’s, and indigenous rights, as well as development and humanitarian considerations, are integrated in the Nature and Species portfolio.
The HoP will lead the development and implementation of the programme strategy, ensuring alignment with the IMS Foundation’s values and principles. Responsibilities include:
1. Scouting, selecting, and partnering with private and public organisations and funders
2. Overseeing grant-making
3. Monitoring impact and fostering learning
4. Designing a programme that bridges academic insights on biodiversity, climate change, and conservation with locally led conservation practices at its core
This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated, solutions-orientated individual to advance the mission of the IMS Foundation. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in nature and species protection, with a proven track record of programmatic leadership. A strategic and holistic thinker with a focus on locally led conservation practices, the successful candidate will be able to work cross-culturally, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and understand how philanthropy can drive change through diverse stakeholders, from grassroots organisations and marginalised groups to governmental institutions and academia. Fluency in English is required, with proficiency in German, French, or Spanish a strong asset.
The role can be based in Zurich, Switzerland or Nairobi, Kenya. Other programme countries of the Foundation in Africa, or Ecuador and Colombia may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The successful candidate should be willing to travel 10-20% of the time.
The salary is competitive and commensurate with the experience required.
