Summary of Classification
This class is accountable for providing instruction and other educational supports such as case management to special needs students and assisting them in their academic and social development.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* A. Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
* B. Credentials: (None specified)
* C. Licences, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
o Valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement(s) appropriate to the teaching assignment.
o May be required to possess a current Motor Vehicle Class D Operator License.
* D. Continuing Education Requirements: Complete all State CEU requirements for re-certification.
* E. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (excerpt):
o Considerable knowledge of current best practices, laws including due process and IDEA, and interventions regarding special needs students.
o Knowledge of child development, educational philosophy, teaching methods, and research‑based strategies.
o Skill in classroom and behavior management.
o Ability to develop and update curriculum, lesson plans, and assessment tools.
o Ability to teach students with varying disabilities and diverse backgrounds.
o Skill in using assistive technology and transition planning.
Position Supervises
May provide work direction to paraprofessionals and clericals as assigned.
Essential Functions
* Attend meetings (staff, building, parent, team, case management).
* Communicate and consult with team members, parents, guardians, and outside agencies about student interventions.
* Develop and maintain data collection systems and analyze data to recommend instruction.
* Use assessment tools and progress reports, including Illinois Interactive report cards.
* Build positive relationships, counsel, and support transition activities and job coaching.
* Develop, adapt, and implement curriculum aligned with academic standards.
* Ensure least restrictive environment practices.
* Assist with transportation issues and student safety on buses.
* Participate in staff development and provide in‑service training.
* Deliver direct instruction using various strategies.
* Manage student behavior and implement disciplinary procedures.
* Support IEP team development, management, and reevaluation.
* Order supplies and materials related to curriculum.
* Provide case management for transition planning at middle/high school levels.
* Work itinerantly with hearing‑impaired students.
* Perform other related duties as required.
