The University of Basel, renowned for its research achievements and as Switzerland's oldest university with over 550 years of history, is seeking a dedicated HPC Linux system administrator to join sciCORE, the center for scientific computing. sciCORE supports data-driven research across various disciplines by managing a large-scale HPC environment, including a Linux cluster with approximately 15,000 cores, about 70 GPUs, and 12 PB of storage.
The successful candidate will:
* Assist our diverse scientific community in utilizing our computing infrastructure and ensure smooth operations.
* Contribute to the configuration and maintenance of HPC and virtualization environments, adapting to research needs following an Infrastructure-as-Code approach.
* Implement security measures, manage user workspaces, and support services within our biomedical IT environment (sciCOREmed).
* Support Linux operations, including storage management, software deployment, web application support, and IT security, based on interest and skills.
* Participate in technical meetings with university and SIB partners.
* Configure, deploy, and maintain scientific computing frameworks like JupyterHub, RStudio, and Shiny, focusing on stability and performance.
* Assist in the general operation of sciCORE, including user support.
The ideal candidate will have:
* A Master's degree in computer science or a related computational field.
* Strong Linux systems administration experience, especially in HPC environments.
* Hands-on experience with web services configuration, scripting (bash, Python), and version control systems like git.
* Knowledge of Linux configuration tools (Ansible, Terraform, MAAS) and virtualization platforms (OpenStack, Proxmox, XenServer).
* Experience with IT security technologies, container deployment, HPC tools (Slurm, Singularity), large-scale storage (GPFS, CEPH), networking, and cloud frameworks.
* Motivation to support a diverse user community and an interest in innovative HPC technologies.
* Excellent communication skills in English; German is a plus.
