Title: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) TEACHER
Qualifications

Valid Minnesota teacher's licensure in ESL required.

English Learner teaching experience in a school setting.

General Education Teaching licensure in Elementary or Secondary in addition to ESL licensure preferred.

Job Goal
To teach and support EL students in reaching English language proficiency according to criteria set by MDE.

Reports To
Assistant Director of Academic Services/Building Principal

Planning and Preparation

Understands nature and needs of the English Learner (EL) including Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP), curriculum, socio-emotional development, and how to use this knowledge in planning.

Uses elements of instructional design to support learner goals and engage students in meaningful learning by creating lessons that have a clearly defined structure.

Articulates methodologies and strategies designed to advance each student's level of English proficiency.

Consults with grade level teachers regarding effective strategies, accommodations, and overall curriculum planning (Elementary).

Consults with content area teachers regarding effective strategies, accommodations, or modifications of content and overall curriculum planning (Secondary).

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of students' diverse backgrounds, skills, special needs, talents, and interests, and uses this knowledge to plan for student learning.

Classroom Management

Creates a classroom environment that encourages positive social interactions among students and between teacher and student.

Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning, sets high expectations for student achievement, makes learning relevant, and fosters student pride in work.

Establishes routines and procedures and effectively utilizes classroom space to enhance learning.

Establishes clear standards for student behavior and responds appropriately and respectfully when expectations are not met.

Provides a welcoming environment for ELs (English Learners).

Instruction

Teaches content and processes of the English language at the appropriate level in order to advance the English language proficiency of assigned students.

Teaches Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing of Academic English, including vocabulary, grammar, reading strategies, and syntax.

Uses multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical thinking, problem solving, self-advocacy, and performance capabilities.

Monitors and adjusts strategies to provide timely, consistent, and high quality feedback to students related to their learning.

Demonstrates responsiveness to students' interests, questions, and makes adjustments to instruction as needed.

Uses educational technology to broaden student knowledge.

Uses research to write and develop curriculum, and creates challenging materials and activities for English Learners that support best practice in teaching English Learners.

Professional Responsibilities

Makes genuine and persistent efforts towards helping all ELLs achieve success.

Advocates for the needs of English Learners within the curricular and co-curricular programs of the district.

Participates in EL curriculum development, staff development, or other committee work to advance student achievement.

Assesses students by reviewing prior educational records, history, student/parent interviews, and administers district approved language proficiency test to determine EL eligibility and placement.

Demonstrates a working understanding of state eligibility criteria for English Learner services as well as knowledge of WIDA Framework for EL.

Assists with registration and scheduling of students and coordinates program scheduling.

Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, school board policy, district procedures, and administrative directives.

Utilizes personal communication, technology, and other means to share student progress and engage families in the instructional process. Notifies parents of student placement in the EL program as well as other modes of communication to share student progress and educate families in the English Learner program.

Engages continuously in reflective practice of classroom instruction, focused on alternative strategies for improvement.

Actively participates in district and school meetings, projects, and committees with the intent of providing constructive input.

Seeks professional growth by participating in professional development activities collaborating with colleagues, and contributing to the teaching profession.

Dresses and presents self in a professional manner to students, parents and the community.

EL Lead teachers will lead in planning and providing professional development in ESL best practices to general ed and EL staff.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
