Overview
The Institute of History of the University of Bern is seeking a full‑time open‑rank Professor in History of the Middle Ages with consideration of digital Methods, beginning 1 February 2027.
Responsibilities
* Represent the entire spectrum of medieval history (approximately 500–1500) in research and teaching.
* Promote the use of digital methods in research and teaching.
* Demonstrate at least two areas of expertise in European medieval history, supported by internationally recognized publications; broad coverage of European history is desirable, especially the High and Late Middle Ages, with attention to interregional relationships and contact zones.
* Actively participate in the development of trans‑epochal research clusters in the History Department, including a leading role in the Digital History cluster.
* Engage in the interdisciplinary Master’s program Digital Humanities at the Walter Benjamin Kolleg.
* Teach a broad range of subjects and methods for 4 hours per week (assistant professorship) or 8 hours per week (associate and full professorship); supervise BA, MA and doctoral theses.
* Participate in academic self‑administration and collaborate with other disciplines.
Qualifications and Appointment Levels
* Depending on qualifications, appointment may be at the level of assistant professor with tenure track, associate professor, or full professor.
* Assistant professor: above‑average doctoral thesis, teaching experience, and an advanced habilitation project; successful evaluation may lead to permanent employment and conversion to an associate professorship.
* Associate or full professorship: postdoctoral qualification or equivalent, and experience in securing third‑party funding.
* Knowledge of digital methods is expected; concrete proposals for new research projects involving digital methods are desirable.
* Proficiency in German (required within two years of starting); good knowledge of French, English and other languages is desirable.
