As an Optics-Electronics Engineer, you will be a vital member of the Geodetic Metrology Group within the Beams Department (BE) at CERN. This group is responsible for providing metrology and alignment services for components installed across the CERN complex, including accelerators, beam transfer lines, and physics experiments.


In this role, you will contribute to the Future Circular Collider (FCC) project, focusing on the development of new large-scale metrology and high-precision alignment solutions.


Specifically, you will:


* work with Frequency Scanning Interferometry (FSI) interferometer and sensors, focusing on developing a low-cost, Fourier-based Frequency Scanning Interferometer (FSI).
* Explore and develop solutions that enable multi-distance measurements of approximately 20 meters with an accuracy of 1 micron.
* Contribute to R&D projects for the Future Circular Collider (FCC), focusing on integrating the vibration-resistant FSI technology into new sensor systems.
* Design and test prototypes to enhance the measurement accuracy, efficiency, and overall capabilities of FSI systems.

Your profile


Skills


* Strong knowledge of electronics, optoelectronics, and optical engineering
* Experience in the design, assembly, and testing of optical and optoelectronic systems with a solid understanding of control systems.
* Proficiency in Python programming.
* Ability to perform precise measurements and conduct inspections using a variety of electronic measurement equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, spectroscopes, network analyzers) and basic metrology tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers).
* Familiarity with digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, including FFT, Hilbert transform, and digital filters
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* Experience with additional programming languages such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, and C++ is highly advantageous.
* Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:


* You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
* You have a professional background in engineer Diploma in Optics, Electronics (or a related field) and have either:
o a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
o or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
* You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information


Job closing date: 29.06.2025 at 23:59h CEST.


Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.


Working hours: 40 hours per week


Target start date: 01-September-2025


This position involves:


* Work in Radiation Areas.
* Interventions in underground installations.
* A valid driving licence.

* A monthly stipend ranging between 6287 and 6911 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).

* 30 days of paid leave per year.
