Job Description

Introduction

Are you interested in taking part in the maintenance and operation of the largest superconducting magnet in operation? Are you passionate about superconducting magnets and associated technologies? Are you interested in research and development? Then take part

You will join:

* The Experimental Physics Department (EP), which carries out fundamental research in the field of particle physics, as well as associated fields and technologies. It aims at providing a stimulating scientific atmosphere and remains an important reference centre for the European physics community and contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
* The ATLAS Magnet Team, part of the ATLAS Detector Operations Group (ADO), which is responsible for maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting the ATLAS Central Solenoid, the ATLAS Toroid magnet, and various other superconducting detector magnet systems at CERN.
* EP Magnet Working Group and EP R&D program, engaged in R&D of technologies for future superconducting detector magnets and contributing to various superconducting detector magnet projects.

Functions

* Join a team of experts who ensure the smooth operation of the ATLAS superconducting magnets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as well as various other superconducting detector magnets at CERN. This includes performing maintenance activities during the planned magnet maintenance periods. It also includes occasional troubleshooting in case of issues outside the planned magnet maintenance periods. It includes documenting maintenance procedures. And finally, it also involves improving the maintenance procedures and associated systems where needed, with an emphasis towards enhanced ATLAS magnet system durability and reliability.
* Prepare maintenance works for the annual end-of-the-year maintenance period and the long shutdown periods.
* Contribute to design activities for future superconducting detector magnet projects, both for CERN and for the international community.
* Participate in Research and Development of technologies for superconducting detector magnets and associated technologies through the CERN EP R&D programme.
* Contribute to the education of the new generation of students and graduates in the field of superconducting detector magnet technology.
Qualifications

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:

* Maintenance and operation of superconducting (detector) magnets.
* Preparation of mechanical designs and drawings, using CAD design software.
* Design and fabrication of superconducting (detector) magnets and associated subcomponents.
* Operation of superconducting magnets and associated systems, including cryogenics, coils, power converters, current leads, and busbars.

Technical competencies:

* Operation and maintenance of superconducting magnet systems.
* Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
* Configuration and use of information management systems: in particular CAD design software such as CATIA.
* Production of 2D drawings and 3D models.

Behavioural competencies:

* Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; driving work / projects along and seeing them through to their conclusion; taking appropriate corrective actions and adapting work / project plans if necessary.
* Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities; contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues.
