Hardin School Districts 17-H & 1 have the following position open for the 2026-2027 School Year:


SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST – DISTRICT WIDE

Applicant must have a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university and hold a valid Montana Educator License with a School Psychologist Endorsement or be able to obtain certification within 60 days of assuming contracted duties. Benefit package includes: Health & Dental Insurance - District pays 80% of the Monthly Premium for All Levels of Coverage (i.e. Single, Two Party, Participant + Children, and Family); Flexible Spending Account for Medical and Dependent Care Expenses; Retirement; Sick and Vacation Leave; and Professional Development Opportunities. Duties begin in August 2026.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

FACILITY: District Wide-Affiliated Buildings-Crow Agency & Hardin

DEPARTMENT: Special Education


POSITION OVERVIEW

The person in this position is a positive, self-motivated, team oriented individual willing to meet the needs of our unique student population and surrounding community. This position provides the school psychologist the opportunity to fill the broader role of a school psychologist, with responsibilities beyond the traditional school psychologist role of assessment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Collaborate and consult with administrators, teachers, community agencies, and school based teams (i.e. Student Support Team, IEP teams, etc.) to help meet students' academic, behavioral, and social/emotional needs.
* Build positive relationships with guardians, and collaborate with them in order to provide the appropriate services needed to help their children (i.e. Parent education, in-school counseling and/or behavioral intervention, refer to outside agencies).
* Work closely with outside providers to ensure seamless services and communication between school, agency, and guardians.
* Provide individual and group counseling, primarily at the middle and high school level.
* Demonstrate continued professional development through course work, research, peer collaboration and/or job-embedded staff development.
* Utilize evidence-based best practice in all aspects of work including pre-referral interventions, consultations and evaluations.
* Participate in design, implementation, and evaluation of interventions with students experiencing academic and behavioral difficulty.
* Administer, score, and analyze a variety of psycho-educational evaluations and/or supplemental assessments relevant to individual students. The average caseload for comprehensive evaluations is approximately 30-35 per year.
* Use assessment results to assist evaluation teams in determining special education eligibility, as well as to identify and assess the learning, development, adjustment, functional capabilities, characteristics, needs of students, and the environmental factors that affect learning and adjustment.
* Use assessment data about the student and his/her environment(s) to develop appropriate, research based interventions and programs.
* Develop and help implement individual, group or systems level interventions to improve or resolve academic, social/emotional/behavioral, and mental health needs as they relate to educational progress. Provide support, instructions, technical assistance and ongoing monitoring of progress toward measurable, identified goals for students at each level.
* Participate in yearly Child Find Screenings at the preschool level. Collaborate with teachers and parents regarding children’s results and possible interventions and/or evaluations.
* Provide crisis/suicide intervention services when needed across the district.
* Report cases of suspected child abuse according to state law (Mandatory Reporter).

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Education / Certification

* Meet competency requirements as set forth in R340.1156 of the Special Education Rules.
* Valid Montana Teaching License with School Psychologist endorsement.

* Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
* Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
* Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, and the general public.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and school community.
* Ability to be flexible in scheduling and planning.
* Ability to effectively use technology in the instructional/learning process.
* Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to handle stressful situations.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters.
* Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and School Board policies.
* Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Will travel from building to other sites. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee rarely performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility, guidance and reinforcement are usually available. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions which require oral and written communications.

Compensation

Salary Range SY26-27 $77,250 – 91,155 DOE.

School Districts 17H & 1

Our Districts have strong academic programs utilizing a variety of techniques for our students. There are programs for special education students and vocational students. There are a variety of music, drama, art, and sports opportunities for students of all ages. We are a Class A district, early childhood through 12th grade, with approximately 1,700 students. The student body is 84% Native American.

Community

Big Horn County, Montana is rich in history, culture and time-honored traditions. It includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations. Hardin (county seat) is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River and the edge of the Crow Reservation. The town is surrounded by productive farms and ranches. Coal mining has also contributed greatly to the local economy. Hardin is located 46 miles southeast of Billings (largest city in the State) by way of Interstate 90. The Big Horn County Museum, Little Big Horn Battlefield and Chief Plenty Coups State Park provide interesting and important history of the area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Yellowtail Dam offers a majestic view of the water below. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports. This area of Big Sky Country also offers fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, camping, etc. for the outdoor enthusiast. Annual events in Big Horn County include: Little Big Horn Days, Native Days, Crow Fair, 4H County Fair and rodeos.
