PhD Position in AI & Software Engineering for Digital Health (Fully Funded, ETH Zurich)

Our research group in the field of Digital Biomarker research (Health Informatics) is looking for a new PhD student starting soon. The position is based in Zurich and will contribute to the development of innovative digital health solutions.

One of our projects, Alex, is a smartphone-based digital health assistant designed to improve asthma control in adolescents by combining age-tailored coaching with low-burden, passive tele-monitoring. The system integrates measurements of lung function and inflammation, tracks environmental exposures and medication adherence, and applies AI/ML models to detect risk, predict exacerbations, and trigger timely, clinician-guided interventions. The project involves a full design–build–evaluate cycle: (1) co-design and prototyping; (2) technical validation; (3) an observational study; and (4) scalability testing in low- and middle-income country settings. If successful, Alex aims to provide a scalable template for pediatric digital health, with potential extensions to conditions like cystic fibrosis, type 1 diabetes, and celiac disease.

Our research is driven by a desire to address the challenges posed by societal changes to healthcare. While the focus in the 20th century was on acute care, the 21st century demands solutions for chronic conditions. With the adoption of ICT and recent advances in AI and statistical modeling, we aim to generate profound healthcare insights. Unlike traditional PhDs in Computer Science or Mathematics, our research focuses on tailoring mobile technology and analytics to specific healthcare applications.

Based in Zurich, a vibrant European city, our work is connected with key healthcare startups and organizations. You will join a dynamic team of motivated researchers in a collaborative environment. The typical duration of our PhD program is about 3-4 years, with support for conference participation and exchange programs. The salary and working conditions are highly competitive and aligned with ETH standards.

We seek candidates interested in:

* Applications of AI in healthcare
* Chronic disease management, especially asthma
* Machine learning, deep learning, AI

Ideal candidates will have a degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Statistics, Signal Processing, or Computer Science, with strong software development skills. Fluency in English is highly recommended. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Preference is given to candidates who can start immediately.

Join ETH Zurich to develop your career with impact, contribute to society, and enjoy a supportive, inclusive environment with benefits like public transport tickets, sports, childcare, and pension plans.

For questions, contact Dr. Filipe Barata at fbarata@ethz.ch. Please state your earliest possible start date and work permit status.

ETH Zurich is a leading university in science and technology, renowned for excellent education and cutting-edge research, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.
