Overview
Swissloop Tunneling (SLT), a student project group from ETH Zurich, is seeking a Frontend Software Engineer to join our software team of 3-5 members. We are dedicated to developing innovative Micro Tunnel Boring Machines (MTBM) and have been recognized with two second-place finishes and Innovation awards in previous Not-a-Boring competitions. Last year, we won the Not-a-Boring competition. The following requirements outline the optimal parameters we seek for this position. However, all of them can be learned or extended throughout your experience within the team. We encourage you to submit your application even if you don’t think you meet all the criteria. Your reliability, commitment, and passion for innovation are the most valuable traits we look for.
Responsibilities
* Collaborate closely with the backend software engineers
* Extend the existing frontend in Node.js, focusing on your own design implementation, modality, and industry standards
* Make critical decisions on the structure and implementation of the frontend
* Implement robust and reusable code, ensuring smooth (existing) communication with the backend
* Contribute to our open work culture through short weekly meetings and monthly team events
* Report weekly to Swissloop Tunneling’s advisors through the updates slide deck
* Attend weekly meetings and working sessions
* Actively contribute to building the association’s culture
Qualifications & Skills
* Outstanding communication and organizational skills
* High availability, commitment to the association’s cause, and active communication
* Aptitude and self-initiative for rapid decision-making and problem-solving
* Nurture a passion for tunneling and scientific research
* Able to maintain a cold spirit when faced with difficulties
* At least minor proficiency in React and potentially familiarity with other frontend frameworks
* Knowledge of Docker and Ubuntu is a plus
* Studying computer science (or equivalent background)
* Working professionally with industry partners and being willing to adhere to the team’s standards
* Open to providing input on frontend technology choices
* You will meet several other skilled and highly motivated individuals and build long-lasting relationships that can endure outside of the association
* You will learn how to build efficient communication channels in code, develop critical decision-making skills for implementation details relating to the project structure, and get the opportunity to extend your contribution to a research thesis or internship for your studies

The expected workload is estimated to be around 4 hours per week, with approximately one hour dedicated to meetings and the rest to individual or group work.
Workplaces
We provide an office and workplace in Zürich at ETH’s Student Project House (SPH) and EMPA in Dübendorf. From day one, you can work independently and take responsibility for your duties and deliverables. The software team normally meets at SPH during weekly meetings.
