This project aims to develop and deploy real-time, model-independent searches for new physics at the full LHC bunch crossing rate, in the CMS Level‑1 Data Scouting system. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of machine learning, real-time systems, and high‑energy physics data processing, contributing to developments in low‑latency ML for data acquisition and triggering. The position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to developments in both machine learning for real‑time systems and fundamental physics searches.
Responsibilities
Development and optimisation of deep learning algorithms for real‑time event reconstruction and physics object calibration in the CMS Level‑1 trigger,
Design and deployment of compact, high‑performance neural representations for high‑throughput, latency‑constrained environments,
Implementation of real‑time, model‑agnostic pattern recognition methods for inclusive physics searches at 40 MHz,
Integration, testing, and validation of these algorithms in the CMS Data Acquisition and Trigger systems for the High‑Luminosity LHC phase.
Qualifications
Applicants should hold a PhD in physics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, ideally with prior experience in experimental particle physics, machine learning, or real‑time computing.
Required skills include:
Programming proficiency in C++ and Python;
Experience in machine learning model development;
A strong interest in ML applications in high‑energy physics.
Experience with the CMS experiment or similar large‑scale data acquisition frameworks is a benefit.
Appointment and Duration
The position is available for 2 years, with the possibility of a 2‑year extension. The expected start date is mid‑2026 or upon mutual agreement.
Application
Interested candidates should submit the following documents (as a single PDF) by December 1st, 2025:
A motivation letter (max 1 page);
A curriculum vitae;
A list of publications;
Contact information for two referees.
Applications should be sent via email with the subject line “ETH LEAP‑40 Postdoc Application” to Dr. Thea Klaeboe Aarrestad at arthea@ethz.ch. Recommendation letters will be requested directly from the provided contacts. Informal inquiries are also welcome at the same address.
