Process Operations Technician (TE-CRG-OP-2026-75-LD)

* Contract

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Introduction:

In this role, you will contribute to the operation of CERN’s unique cryogenic installations that enable the Large Hadron Collider and its particle detectors to operate. You will monitor and support the operation and maintenance of large-scale cryogenic systems as part of an international technical team. This is an opportunity to work with advanced industrial equipment and technologies in a highly specialised environment.

Functions:

* Operate and monitor cryogenic installations used to cool accelerator systems and detectors during operation periods.
* Support preventive and corrective maintenance activities on cryogenic installations outside operation periods.
* Participate in a 24/7 shift team supervising process parameters and identifying operational anomalies.
* Carry out first-line troubleshooting and technical interventions on electrical, instrumentation, and control systems, on-site and remotely.
* Apply operating and safety procedures during interventions on industrial cryogenic equipment.
* Record incidents, interventions, and operational observations in technical documentation.
* Create and maintain operating procedures and intervention instructions when required.
* Work closely with technicians, operators, and engineers in an international technical team.

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Process or Electrical Engineering, Industrial Instrumentation, Physical Measurements or a related field.

Experience:

* Initial experience in operation/commissioning/maintenance of industrial electromechanical or process installations.
* Familiarity with industrial equipment involving process fluids, electricity, instrumentation and control systems.
* Knowledge of cryogenic systems, instrumentation, or vacuum technology would be an asset.
* Ability to work in an operational environment requiring careful application of safety procedures.

Note that a dedicated training period during the first months will allow you to acquire the practical knowledge and familiarity with the installations needed to progressively take up the activities of the role.

* Knowledge and application of thermodynamics and energetics.
* Operation and maintenance of electrical circuits and networks.
* Operation and maintenance of cryogenic systems.
* Installation and commissioning of cryogenic systems.
* Operation and maintenance of vacuum systems.
* Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
* Solving Problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
* Communicating Effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
* Learning and Sharing Knowledge: taking steps to expand knowledge in other areas of expertise beyond own field.
* Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.

Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Eligibility and closing date:

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 28.04.2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Employment Conditions:

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week

Job Flexibility: Fully Onsite

This position involves:

* Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and official holidays.
* Work in Radiation Areas.
* Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays.
* Shift work, including nights, Sundays and official holidays.
* Interventions in underground installations.
* A valid driving licence.
* Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions
* Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

Job grade: 3-4
